Friendships new and old formed the foundation of the Nairobi stop. Angela Oduor Lungati invited Dr. Joy to partner with Ushahidi to bring Coded Bias to Kenya. Ushahidi is a nonprofit world-famous for developing and demonstrating the power of open-sourced crowd-sourced tools for responding to disasters and organizing mutual aid. Baraza Media Lab, a vibrant hub for Kenyan creative and entrepreneurs served as a welcoming venue to show the documentary, record a podcast episode, interview local voices, sign books, and engage in critical conversations.
After the screening we were fortunate to enjoy the Nairobi National Park and take a tour of the Basi Go electric bus company factory in Thika, Kenya. There AJL conducted a workshop of facial recognition technologies during a learning hour. The session was hosted by Mairiam M, a graduate of MIT Media Lab who met Dr. Joy when they were both students.
