The Brazil stop represented our first South American screening. We partnered with the WEF Young Global Leaders to show Coded Bias on a boat floating down the Amazon river as part of an intercultural learning journey led by Luana Génot. After an unforgettable voyage in Manaus where we learned from indigenous leaders and local entrepreneurs, we made our way to Rio de Janeiro. Next to sun soaked courtyards, we screened the documentary in Brazilian Portuguese.
The conversation around AI bias is at a critical point in Brazil, as politicians debate how to use facial recognition technologies in public spaces – including football stadiums. This urgency was palpable in the post-film Q&A session featuring Brazilian activist and computer scientist Nina da Hora.
The diversity of Brazil was reflected in the the many institutions, hosts, and translators, who made these events possible: The Núcleo Rio de Janeiro RBAC, Secretaria Municipal de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação do Rio de Janeiro, Instituto da Hora, Cátedra Fredric Litto - UFRJ, Tatiana Roque, Carla Rênes, Ana Carolina da Hora, Semaj Warren Moore, Veronica Vieira from Diaspora Black. Our work traveled nationwide with an interview for Globo News that was conducted by Aline Midlej ahead of the screening.
