Dr. Joy Buolamwini grew up in Oxford, Mississippi as the child of Ghanaian immigrants. This homecoming screening included trips to locations and communities that shaped the early foundation of Dr. Joy’s development as a curious student. We visited Bramlett Elementary school and had a role model conversation with kindergartners and first-graders in Ms. Green’s computer science classes. We visited the iconic Square Books independent bookstore, where 6-year-old Dr. Joy would enjoy scones and books with her mother. Finally, we screened the documentary at the Oxford Public Library on the very stage Dr. Joy’s brother used to take her to watch magic shows and puppet performances.
